Interview with Jay Faerber, Part 2
Info News Fan-Fic Picture Spotlight Board Links Misc.

Arcane- What exactly are your plans for Gen X, at this time? And what is the status quo you hope to establish on the book?

Faerber- I can't exactly give away the status quo yet (that will become clear in #50), but I can say that the school -- and academic life -- will be the primary focus of my run.

Arcane- Will you or rather do you have any plans to address such real life teen issue like substance abuse, sexuality, etc.?

Faerber- Not initially no, but who knows what'll happen down the road.

Arcane- You've said/stated that you are familiar with Generation X, do you have any plans to 'fix' any continuity glitches such as White Queen's telekinesis or M/Penance?

Faerber- No, sorry.

Arcane- You've mentioned M is your fave character because of her characteristics. How do you intend on utilizing her with out making her seem like the Claduette/Nicole-M?

Faerber- Basically, if you thought the Claudette/Nicole version of "M" was a bitch, you ain't seen NOTHING yet. I'll also be exploring WHY the real M behaved as she did while she was Penance, and why she ISN'T acting like that now.

Arcane- Do you plan on writing stories on a more realistic level or will surreal stories creep in from time to time? Are there any stories you feel particularly inclined towards writing?

Faerber- Well, we're talking about superhumanly powerful mutants here, so "realistic" is pretty much thrown out the window. But I do tend to prefer stories with more of a "crime drama"-slant than a "fantasy"-slant. Or, to put it another way, you'll be more likely to see crime families in my book than clans of elves.

Arcane- How about danglers like: Magneto/Banshee connection?

Faerber- Not at this time.

Arcane- St. Croix saga - fate of their mother, Gateway connection?

Faerber- I don't have any set plans for that, but it is something that interests me, so it could come up sometime. I'm interested in introducing ALL the kids' parents.

Arcane- Chevy, the kid from #16, 18, 20 and the mystery guy from #20?

Faerber- No plans for Chevy, sorry.

Arcane- Mondo and Blink, will we get any mention of them?

Faerber- I have no immediate plans for Mondo, and NO BLINK!!!

Arcane- So the incentive will be on moving onwards?

Faerber- Judging by the [earlier] answers, you can probably tell that I'm much more interested in moving upwards and onwards, putting the characters in new and exciting situations rather than explaining old, minor, inconsistencies.

Arcane- There has been general want by fans for the book to return to its roots as a book about young mutants in training, how do you feel about this and what is your approach to this issue?

Faerber- As stated [earlier], the mutants-in-training aspect will be my primary focus, and through that, we'll be seeing some of the characters develop their powers in new and interesting ways. Which only makes sense, since that's why they're there, right?

Arcane- Are we going to get more development of romantic relationships with the students? More dramatization?

Faerber- Oh yeah, romance and drama out the ying-yang. Frank Pittarese [the GENERATION X editor] and I are both big soap opera fans, so we'll be bringing a healthy dose of serialized drama (by way of subplots and the like) to the book. But don't let the words "soap opera" scare you. Some of the most classic comic books had heavy soap opera influences, from Claremont & Byrne's UNCANNY X-MEN to Perez & Wolfman's NEW TEEN TITANS.

Arcane- Any plans for new students? New antagonist? Or will emphasis be on the current roster and current antagonist? Will we see any character(s) be left out of the book?

Faerber- That's a tricky one. There will be additions to the cast brought on in #50, but I'm not saying in what capacity. We won't be seeing much of Gen X's existing rogues' gallery, though. Frank, Terry, and I have come up with a number of new villains, like Hunter Brawn .... LeGault .... the Rising Sons ... a new take on the Salem Seven, for them to square off against. But rest assured, none of the Gen X kids are going anywhere.

Arcane- Are there any plans for more guest teachers or additions to the current teaching staff?

Faerber- We've discussed the idea of bringing in existing X-characters -- and maybe even other MU characters -- as guest lecturers, but nothing's been finalized.

Arcane- You've mentioned that if you have your way that #50 would be a beginning and an end. Care to tell what initial ideas you have?

Faerber- Well, #50 sets up the new status quo for the characters, and introduces villains Hunter Brawn and LeGault to the Gen X mythos. It really sets in motion a lot of developments that will play out over the following year.
