Interview with Jay Faerber, Part 1
Info News Fan-Fic Fan Art Board Links Misc.

Nate1234- How'd you get into writing comics?

Faerber- I've wanted to write comics longer than I can remember, and I just sent out proposal after proposal, and to make a long story short, Frank Pittarese liked my stuff enough to take a chance on me and let me write What If #114. At the same time over at DC, my pal Devin Grayson convinced her editor Eddie Berganza to let me write the 10-page Wonder Girl story for the Secret Origins 80-Page Giant. Both editors must have similarly bad taste, because they have both given me more work.

Nate1234- How'd you land a job writing Gen X?

Faerber- I'd already worked with Gen X editor Frank Pittarese on What If and my Gen X fill-in, and apparently he liked my work, because he asked me to come on board full time!

Nate1234- What have you done to prepare for writing Gen X?

Faerber- I've read up on my Gen X collection, and talked briefly to Frank Pittarese today about the direction we want to head in. So far, that's it.

Nate1234- Have you talked to Chris Bachalo or Scott Lobdell at any time about Gen X?

Faerber- No. I respect what they've done on the book, and I hope I live up to their standard, but they don't own the characters, so I don't feel it necessary to bother them with questions about the book. After all, Marvel's paying me because they want me to tell my stories, not try and tell Scott's.

Nate1234- Terry Dodson is still going to be the artist, correct?

Faerber- Yes. Terry will continue to pencil, and his wife Rachel will continue to ink.

Nate1234- What are your previous writing experiences?

Faerber- In addition to my current Gen X assignment, I've already written What If #114, Generation X #45, X-Force #84 (dialogue only, over John Moore's plot), the Wonder Girl story in DC's Secret Origins 80-Page Giant, and a short story in Titans Secret Files.

Nate1234- I noticed you've written some Titan fan-fic. This brings up two questions: 1. Have/will you write any Gen X fan-fic? 2. With the return of the original Titans, what would you think about a Gen X/Titans crossover?

Faerber- I've never written any Gen X fan-fic... and I have no plans to (why would I? I've got the real thing!). Given that I'm a huge Titans fan, and that new Titans writer Devin Grayson and I go way back, I would absolutely love the idea. I doubt it will ever happen, though.

Nate1234- Hey, it could happen. As it is, Marvel and DC are right now writing a Hulk/Superman crossover and whenever they make one crossover, they automatically make another DC/Marvel crossover right after (since Marvel usually makes one and DC makes the other). If you could do this story, would it be a team-up or a fight?

Faerber- I don't doubt Marvel would do a Gen X crossover with a DC title, I just doubt it would be Titans. With Dev taking over, Titans will feature mostly characters in their 20s, making them a much more logical match-up with X-Force than Gen X. Gen X's logical choice would be Young Justice.

But to answer your question, IF I had my way, it'd most definitely be a team-up. Actually, it'd be a "hang out" more than anything, with the characters just sitting around talking. You know, all the Gen Xers would be trying to get the older Titans to buy them beer and stuff.

Nate1234- Have you read any Gen X fan-fics?

Faerber- No, I haven't read any.

Nate1234- How long does it take you to write a comic, on average?

Faerber- That's a hard question to answer, because it's a convoluted process, and everyone works differently. Plus, I'm still quite new at this, and haven't written enough scripts to really know how long it takes me. But I think it's safe to say that it takes me within a week, all told. That includes coming up with the initial plot, all the way through the scripting process.

Nate1234- Which writers have been your biggest influence?

Faerber- I'm influenced by Mark Waid, Warren Ellis, Devin Grayson, John Ostrander, Robert B. Parker, Donald P. Bellisario, David E. Kelley, Stephen J. Cannell, and Paul Haggis.

Nate1234- Who's your favorite Gen X member?

Faerber- I hate to play favorites, but I really like M. Her name's easy to spell.

Nate1234- Issue 50 is coming up soon. If you can have it your way, will it be the start/ending of a storyline or just a one-shot?

Faerber- If I have my way, #50 will be an ending AND a beginning. Heh heh heh.....
