Jay Faerber: Five Years of Gen X

Nate1234: Issue #55 marks your ninth published issue of Gen X. How's it feel to have written nine issues?

Jay Faerber: It feels great! I've been working on the book for just about a year now. Sometimes it feels like I've been writing these kids forever, other times it feels like it just started yesterday. I'm still discovering new things about the kids, so every month is lots of fun!

Nate1234: In the past few month's, you've also introduced readers to Slaughter, Brawn, and the Rising Sons. Big questions: who wants a rematch and who gets it first?

Faerber: Hunter Brawn is the first of those baddies to show up again. But I'm not saying where or when.

Nate1234: In issue #54, you did a bit of foreshadowing to Viper crossing Gen X's path. Do you know when and can you tell us anything about the current plot plans? And will Wolverine guest-star?

Faerber: That plot's been killed. Unfortunately, we didn't know Erik Larsen had Viper become a prisoner of Arnim Zola over in WOLVERINE. So I doubt Viper will be showing up any time soon.

Nate1234: "X-Men Universe" said Wendigo and maybe even Black Panther may be popping up soon. Any developments on their guest-appearances?

Faerber: I don't think either will be happening in the near future.

Nate1234: Time for the oldest question in the book: is the Blink that appears in "Astonishing X-Men #1" going to join Gen X?

Faerber: The oldest question in the book deserves the oldest answer -- wait and see!

Nate1234: Do you know if Blink's part of the Twelve? I was discussing how cool it'd be story wise if an AoA character had to fight Apocalypse in the regular Marvel universe, and then one of my friends pointed me to Astonishing X-Men #3's preview which said a lot of them will be part of the Twelve.

Faerber: I know whether or not she is, but I'm not telling.

Nate1234: How'd the idea for Adrienne Frost come up?

Faerber: I wanted to introduce some more conflict into the group. I liked the old "bad-ass" Emma Frost, but she's come so far since those days, I didn't feel it'd be right if she suddenly started acting like she did back in the Hellfire Club. By introducing Adrienne, I had my "bad-ass" character, and it gives Emma someone to really play off of. By default, Emma is forced to have a conscience. I originally had a different ending for #54, but then-new editor Jason Liebig came up with the idea to have Adrienne arrange her husband's death -- a twist I only wish I had come up with!

Nate1234: What's this deal with "Steven?" Adrienne killed him, so . . . is this just going to be a subplot or is it eventually going to be a big focus?

Faerber: Neither, really. It happened in the past. There's not really a whole lot more to tell about it. Steven was her husband, and she killed him. The end.

Nate1234: Are there going to be any more guest X-lecturers? Or *gasp* . . . X-chaperones?

Faerber: Yes, and yes. Both in #57, the big school dance issue.

Nate1234: About the dance: okay, Paige is going with Tristan, but Jono wants to take her. Jubes wants Ev, but M may get him. And if Jubes can't get him, she's stuck with "Elephant-Man." And then there's all of those pesky rich human brats who'll be sure to hit on some Gen Xer. Plus, some villain is returning. (Emplate? Mondo? Omega Red?) Quite the development you've developed so far, eh? What's it going to be like?

Faerber: Better you should read it and find out for yourself, don't you think? But I will say that you're limiting your thinking too much. Yes, Paige is going with Tristan. But don't assume the OTHER kids won't go with normal human kids also. I think some of the pairings will surprise you.

Nate1234: After the dance, is Paige still going to be with Tristan or will her problems with Jono have been resolved?

Faerber: Now why would I give away that ending?

Nate1234: When Paige said she would go out with him and she said "We're talking about one date. How dangerous can it be?" it sorta had me have this feeling for some reason that something bad was going to happen not involving villains, like a pregnancy or something. Was that the plan?

Faerber: No, sorry.

Nate1234: After Columbine, has there been any stress on how you must write the series?

Faerber: Not really, no. The stories I tell in Gen X aren't really affected by it, but I've had to change a couple scenes in some NEW WARRIORS issues.

Nate1234: New Warriors will be beginning in August. Are there currently any plans for them to meet Generation X?

Faerber: We're talking about it, but nothing is set in stone yet.

Nate1234: If the Gen X tv series were a hit, you think they'd make you alter how the comic is currently to match it more?

Faerber: I doubt it. I think it's more likely that they'd put out a GENERATION X ADVENTURES comic, to tie into the TV show.

Nate1234: They still haven't contacted you much about it, though, right?

Faerber: Nope. I was asked to put together my thoughts on the characters, for free, awhile back, but I didn't do it.

Nate1234: Has there been any consideration to have some GenXers "graduate"? I know Jono's getting a little old to still be in school.

Faerber: Not really, no.

Nate1234: I hear this year's annual plays a big part in the series? What can you tell us about it?

Faerber: I can tell you that the Annual is definitely set firmly in the ongoing continuity. The Annual ships in October, so the flow is 57, 58, Annual 99, 59, etc. The theme of our annual is "family," and will spotlight Jubilee, Monet, and Tristan.
