Sequel?
Generation X came very close for a long time to having a follow-up. Initially, the movie was designed as a pilot episode for a television series that would reunite the cast on weekly adventures. Marketing had developed the idea so far that plans for Buff and Refrax action figures were made. The show was also supposed to air on the same night as X-Files in order to make a “X-Night.”

However, the movie was a Nielsen’s ratings disaster. Fox, though, still wanted a Generation X television show and plans went forth to create a second movie that would hopefully boost interest. Scripts were written, including one including a gay North Star. Rumor had it that Walter Jones, who stared as the Black Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, was to play Synch.

But years passed, and the sequel still had not come. Plans changed to a syndicated television series for a while, but then, when the X-Men movie looked like it might finally be coming to theaters, Fox began once again to work on a Generation X series. The series was to be made by Saban Entertainment, the makers of Power Rangers, and was to air with the Fox Kids line-up. Steve Melching of the X-Men animated series was linked to the project for a while, and revealed in interviews that Fox was “taking this thing very seriously.” The writer said the show would be "concentrating on issues of teen angst, compounded by the fact that they're mutants learning to use their powers to save a world that hates and fears them." He even confirmed that Fox had basically decided upon the team line-up. However, Fox continued not to put the show on its fall or spring slates. An animated series was also considered.

Ultimately, a potential Generation X follow-up died because of X-Men Evolution. The cartoon was very similar to any potential Generation X series due to its focus on teenage mutants. Marvel chose instead to create a Mutant X television series. When Generation X the comic book was cancelled, all hopes for a sequel died.
